Space-based Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) - MC015

Overview

Course duration: 4 hours

The Space-based ISR course provides a comprehensive overview of the principles, technologies, and operational applications of space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems. Participants learn about the various sensor types - including Electro Optic sensors in the ultraviolet, visible, infrared bands, radar, and signals intelligence (SIGINT) - and how their unique capabilities support defence operations, environmental monitoring, and global security. The course covers optimum sensor orbits, imaging techniques, spectral analysis, and the integration of civilian and military networks, emphasizing the importance of revisit rates, resolution, and data fusion for effective situational awareness.

Through practical examples and discussion-based learning, students explore the strengths and limitations of different sensor modalities, the impact of atmospheric and space weather effects, and the role of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in processing ISR data. By the end of the course, graduates are equipped to assess ISR requirements, interpret sensor outputs, and contribute to mission planning and decision-making in complex operational environments.
