The Introduction to Autonomous Undersea Warfare (AUW) course provides students with a practical understanding of how autonomous maritime systems are transforming modern undersea warfare.
Delivered jointly by SOIO and the Australian Maritime College (AMC Search), this course combines the operational principles of Undersea Warfare (USW) with the technologies, platforms, sensors, and mission planning processes underpinning autonomous underwater and surface systems. Students explore how uncrewed and autonomous capabilities are employed to support military operations including surveillance, reconnaissance, mine countermeasures, critical undersea infrastructure protection, and wider maritime security activities.
The course introduces core undersea warfare concepts before progressing into autonomous maritime system fundamentals including hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, navigation, communications, vehicle performance analysis and mission planning. Participants gain exposure to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), sensors, localisation techniques and emerging technologies shaping the future of maritime operations.
A key feature of the course is the integration of practical activities conducted using autonomous maritime systems operated by AMC Search. Students participate in mission planning workshops and practical demonstrations involving autonomous vehicle operations, allowing them to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application.
The course culminates in a Command Professional Edition (CPE) operational scenario where students apply the knowledge gained throughout the week to analyse autonomous system employment within an undersea warfare environment.
