Short Courses
The School of Information Operations (SOIO) has been training the next generation of Australian Warfare professionals since 2019. With over 30 courses offered every year, SOIO has helped to introduce systems and operations concepts for the underlying foundational understanding of Australian Government Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities.
With courses covering multiple warfare disciplines, SOIO is leading the industry by offering defence related training delivered by experienced instructors who have decades of experience in the field. With SOIO, you get first-hand, practical operational experience in addition to theory and systems knowledge.
SOIO continues to expand the number and relevance of each course's objectives to meet the growing requirement for defence-related training in all operational domains of interest to the Australian Defence Organisation, defence industry and academia.
SOIO Defence short courses
SOIO's short courses provide students with a fundamental overview of Information Operations: Electronic Warfare, Undersea Warfare, Defence Space Operations, Maritime Operations, Cyber Governance and Military Uncrewed Aerial Systems.
SOIO offers both classified and unclassified courses.
Our unclassified courses are available to all participants with an Australian / New Zealand Citizenship or who hold an active AVGSA NV1 (or higher) security clearance.
Our classified courses are suitable for Australian / New Zealand Government personnel with an active AVGSA NV1 (or higher) security clearance and an established need-to-know. Those who work in the wider Defence industry wishing to attend must have an Australian / New Zealand Government sponsor (minimum APS6/O4) who can provide a recommendation of attendance and confirmation of the need-to-know.

SC001 Electronic Warfare Short Course (EW)
This course provides students with the basic principles of Electronic Warfare (EW) in all domains. The course introduces the three pillars of EW – Electronic Support (ES), Electronic Attack (EA) and Electronic Protection (EP) as well as Radar, Electro Optics (EO) principles and associated operational support concepts. The course also discusses offensive and defensive cyberspace operations. Practical scenarios and workshops are utilised to support operational EW concepts.
Intended Audience
This electronic warfare course is suitable for personnel that require a basic understanding of the principles of EW.

SC002 Introduction to Undersea Warfare (USW)
This course provides students with the basic principles of Undersea Warfare (USW). The course introduces basic submarine detection theory and technologies including sonar (active and passive), Electro Optics, Magnetic Anomaly Detection (MAD) principles, undersea environment and associated operational concepts. Practical scenarios and workshops are utilised to support operational USW concepts.
Intended Audience
This course is suitable for personnel that require a basic understanding of the principles of USW.

SC003 Introduction to Defence Space Operations
This course provides students a holistic overview of Defence Space Operations including Military Satellite Communications (SATCOM), space-based Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Space Domain Awareness (SDA), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services, and the concept and examples of Contested Space. The course also includes an introduction to space law and orbital motion. Practical scenarios and workshops are utilised to support operational Defence Space concepts.
Intended Audience
This course is suitable for personnel that require a basic understanding of the principles of Military Space Operations.

SC004 Introduction to Maritime Operations (MO)
This course provides students with the basic principles of Maritime Operations. The course introduces Core Maritime Operations roles such as Sea Control, Power Projection and Maritime Security and breaks each into its components. Critical enabling capabilities such as C4ISREW, Survey, Maritime weapons and Uncrewed systems are also discussed. Practical scenarios and workshops are utilised to support Maritime Operations concepts.

This course is suitable for personnel that require a basic understanding of the principles of Maritime Operations.

SC005 Introduction to Cyber Security Frameworks and Governance
This course provides students with the principles associated with Military Cyber Operations with an introduction to both Offensive and Defensive Cyber concepts. The course provides students with a core understanding of Cyber Management frameworks such as National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), ISO 27000 etc concentrating on how they relate to Australian Governmental cyber security policies, operations and principles, such as the ISM. This enables an understanding of the implementation of practical cybersecurity and privacy through effective application of standards and best practices necessary for organisations to adopt cybersecurity capabilities. The course also includes a practical demonstration of cyber threats on the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre's cyber range.
Intended Audience
This course is suitable for personnel that require an introductory understanding of cyber security governance in relation to Australian cyber security policies and the management of cyber security risk.

SC006 Introduction to Military Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS)
This course provides students with a foundation understanding of Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) within the military context. Students will cover various modules including UAS doctrine, regulation, classification, capabilities, and analysing the use of UASs to supplement military operations and existing intelligence cycles.
The course will culminate in an operationally focussed mission planning exercise to consolidate the theoretical concepts covered. The course is classroom based and does not include live UAS training.

This course is suitable for personnel that require a basic understanding of UAS operations within a military context.
